Luke 8:24 24 “And they went and woke him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we are perishing!’ And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.”
In the rush and business of life, it is easy to fall prey to the chaos and see nothing but a storm. We forget that God is literally with us in the boat of life and that He won’t let us perish. When the disciples of Jesus were caught in a storm, they panicked and felt as though they would perish even though God Almighty was right there with them. Jesus could have ended the storm before they called out to Him for help. Yet, He waited until they called on Him before He calmly ordered the winds and waves to be still. He came to their assistance immediately because He was close by all along.
Only God can stop the storm
We need to learn how to let God bring calmness into our life. We use up so much energy panicking, worrying and being afraid when we could be relying on the Master of the Universe to stop the storm. He spoke creation into existence with just His word. He stopped the raging storm when He was with the disciples with just His word. When Christ walked on this earth, He healed people with just His word. If we have His spirit living within us, we also can command the storm to be still by the power of His name. Jesus offers us all a life of peace. We need to just accept that we can live a calm and peaceful life if we let God control the storm.
That is easier said than done
As a teacher, I allow myself to get panicked when my grades become due, work piles up, the students act up in class, and my to-do list is longer than there are hours in the day. When I am trying to stop the storm instead of just letting God bring the peace, I am the one who ends up flustered. It’s time for us all to let God do what He does best - bring peace into our lives.
Pray this prayer with me
Dear God, help me to let You bring peace into my life. When I am battling a seemingly unending storm, help me to remember to rely on you for peace. Help me to believe Your Word and to apply it in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
